How Much Space Does a Home Sauna Need?

Use the sauna’s exterior dimensions only as the starting rectangle. Add the manufacturer’s wall and ceiling clearances, door swing, control access, ventilation space, cord path, and enough room to assemble or service the roof and panels.

Build a footprint template

Tape the exact exterior footprint on the floor. Mark the door arc, nearby doors and drawers, breaker or outlet location, and walking path. Then add specified clearances rather than pushing the cabin tightly against walls.

Ceiling height can be the hidden blocker

A 75-inch cabin does not necessarily fit comfortably under a 76-inch ceiling. The roof panel may need to be lifted, shifted, or lowered onto wall panels. Include roof accessories, lighting, overhangs, and the manual’s top clearance.

Capacity labels do not tell you comfort

A nominal two-person sauna may be best as a roomy one-person cabin. Compare interior bench width and depth, shoulder room, leg position, heater locations, and whether both users receive direct radiant coverage.
